Highlights
- Ride the underground train into Postojna Cave
- Meet the cave-dwelling olm, the baby dragon
- Cross the canyon bridges of Škocjan (UNESCO)
- Predjama, the castle in a cave mouth
Beneath Slovenia lies another country entirely. A third of the surface is limestone Karst, riddled with over 10,000 caves — and about 100 new ones found every year.
The headliner is Postojna Cave, where an underground railway has carried visitors into the earth for over 200 years. Down there lives the olm, the pale ‘human fish’ that locals call a baby dragon.
Nearby, the Škocjan Caves are another scale entirely — a UNESCO World Heritage site carved by the Reka River into a vast canyon you cross on dizzying bridges.
Then there’s Predjama Castle, a fortress built into the mouth of a cave, half-swallowed by the cliff.
It stays cool underground all year, so this makes a great rain-or-shine day — and it’s entirely yours to pace.
