Caves

Slovenia is a country carved by water, where 35% of the surface is mainly limestone, making it full of Karst phenomena. The most remarkable are the underground caves, with more than 10.000 already discovered and around 100 found each year. 

The most famous of them is the Postojna Cave, a cave with an underground railway that has been open for tourists for over 200 years. After the awe-inspiring train ride deep into it, you can explore the cave’s miracles on foot. The cave is also home to the amphibian species called proteus or olm, sometimes referred to as the Human fish or a “baby dragon”. Come and find out why they call it like that.

The other magnificent cave system worth visiting are the Škocjan Caves. They have been on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1986, the only monument in Slovenia to have that honour. The 5-kilometre cave, carved by the Reka River, can be explored on walk paths and bridges across a canyon of epic proportions.
