The Alps

Slovenia is home to 3 mountain ranges that are part of the Southern Limestone Alps — the Julian Alps, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and the Karawanks. The Julian Alps are the most famous, as they are the highest. Their highest peak is Mt. Triglav at 2864 metres, which is also an important symbol of Slovenia and can be found on the flag of Slovenia. A large part of the Julian Alps is protected under the area of the Triglav National Park that offers endless possibilities for hiking. Besides that, the area is also full of other must-see places like Lake Bohinj, Pokljuka Plateau, Vršič Pass, the Triglav Lakes Valley, and more.

While the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karawanks are less known, they are nonetheless beautiful. They are a place of amazing and diverse natural beauty characterised by mountain plateaus, sharp peaks, scenic valleys, and knife-like ridges. All of that is interspersed with numerous hiking trails leading you past various natural and cultural landmarks. If you don’t have the time to experience all of this on foot or on a bike, you should still visit one of the most scenic glacial valleys in Slovenia, the Logar Valley, and take a photo of the cute shepherd villages on the high mountain plateau of Velika Planina.
