Lipica Stud Farm
Description
The Lipica Estate is the home of the famous white Lipizzaner horses and the largest Lipizzaner stud farm in the world, located in the wind-swept Karst region. It has been around since 1580, placing it amongst the oldest stud farms in Europe. It was breeding horses for the Holy Roman Empire’s royalty, the Habsburgs and the other empires that ruled these lands over its history. All this makes the Lipica Stud Farm one of the most important cultural monuments in Slovenia.
You can see almost 300 horses of the Lipizzaner breed there. Although they are known as white, they are actually grey and born brown but lighten up because of their mutated genes when they grow older. On the estate, you can check out several museums, the Lipica Riding School show, or even try to make friends with the horses and try riding them.
